EGU 2020

40 years with International Lithosphere Program (ILP),  Geodynamics of continental crust and upper mantle, and the nature of mantle discontinuities
Co-organized by SM4/TS11
Convener: Alexey Shulgin | Co-conveners: Hans Thybo, Magdalena Scheck-Wenderoth, Alexander Rudloff, Lev Vinnik
Chat time: Tuesday, 5 May 2020, 14:00-15:45

International Lithosphere Program (ILP) has since 1980 been initiating major international, multidisciplinary research programmes to elucidate the nature, dynamics, origin and evolution of the lithosphere. ILP has taken initiative to more than 70 programmes within its four research themes: (1) Geoscience of Global Change, (2) Contemporary Dynamics and Deep Processes, (3) Continental Lithosphere and (4) Oceanic Lithosphere. Example programmes initiated by ILP include World Stress Map, Global Strain Rate Map, Global Seismic Hazard Assessment Map, Seismic Hazards and Megacities, Global Impact project, International Continental Drilling Program (ICDP), and a series of Global Geoscience Transects and programmes. Present programmes focus on integrated mapping of lithosphere physical parameters, lithosphere dynamics including the fate of subducted lithosphere and deformation of continental lithosphere, response of the lithosphere to surface processes including changes in climate and erosion/deposition dynamics, mineral resources, and seismic risk. ILP promotes high class science in combination with community services through the Evgueni Burov medal for mid-career scientists and the Flinn-Hart Award for outstanding early-career scientists, which are awarded during the UGU annual meeting. The activities of ILP seeks to achieve a balance between: addressing societal needs in regard to e.g. natural catastrophes, resource exploration and environmental protection; and satisfying scientific curiosity in regard to global and regional processes affecting the lithosphere.

ILP will present major achievements during the past 40 years through a series of invited talks at the union session. In a associated session, we invite all scientists to present their recent research on lithosphere formation, structure and evolution. We particularly invite the teams of the ILP task forces and coordinating committees to present new results of their international and multidisciplinary cooperation networks.

ILP Conference Celebrating Excellence in Solid Earth Sciences

21 - 23 September 2015, GFZ-Potsdam, Telegrafenberg, Potsdam, Germany

The International Lithosphere Program (ILP) seeks to elucidate the nature, dynamics, origin and evolution of the lithosphere through international, multidisciplinary geoscience research projects and coordinating committees. The ILP is charged with promoting multidisciplinary research projects of interest to both the geological (International Union of Geological Sciences - IUGS) and geophysical (IUGG) communities.

The ILP Conference Celebrating Excellence in Solid Earth Sciences was held in Potsdam, Germany, from 21-23 September 2015 to celebrate the ILP's 35th birthday. Together with more than 50 scientists, members of the ILP Task Forces and Coordinating Committees, the ILP Bureau and ILP's office gathered together to discuss the research findings, science plans, and new projects. Hans Thybo, President of the European Geosciences Unions (EGU), Harsh Gupta, IUGG Immediate Past President, and Roland Oberhänsli, IUGS President, delivered keynote lectures at the conference.
