Topic: Tectonic Activity, Geomorphic Evolution, and Sea-Level Change

Speaker: Professor Bilal Haq

Time: October 27-29, 2025

Venue: Conference Room 6, Beiqing Road Base, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences

ZOOM: 831 6822 7543 (Password: 123456)

Hosts: Professor Irina Artemieva, Professor Hans Thybo

Course Description:

Global sea-level change provides a crucial window into Earth's paleo-oceanographic environments and geodynamic processes, involving research in sequence stratigraphy, climate change, seismic imaging, and geodynamics. This course, based on Prof. Bilal Haq's new book Restless Tides of Time - Sea-Level Change: Past, Present and Prescient, will explore in detail the coupling relationships between sea-level change, climate evolution, topography, and tectonic activities. It will highlight the importance of interdisciplinary research in modern Earth sciences.

Speaker Profile

Prof. Bilal Haq from Sorbonne University, France, is an internationally renowned marine geologist and one of the founders of sequence stratigraphy. He formerly served as the Director of the Marine Geosciences Program at the U.S. National Science Foundation and the consultant of the U.S. President and national committees. As a pioneer scientist, he established the first systematic global sea-level change curve for the Phanerozoic, which remains one of the most influential and highly cited papers in the Earth sciences.
